Biography
Ronald Reagan was the 40th President of the United States of America, most famous for ending the Cold War and leading the US out of one of its worst recessions. Born of February 6, 1911, in Tampico, Illinois, Ronald Wilson Reagan was the son of Nelle Clyde and John Edward Reagan. After graduating Dixon High School, Reagan got a job as a lifeguard, then a radio commentator for a brief amount of time, and then an actor. He married actress Jane Wyman on January 26th, 1940, and had two children. Reagan divorced with Jane, and 12 years later married Nancy Davis. Reagan launched his political career by giving a televised speech for Republic presidential nominee Barry Goldwater, sucking him into politics. He was elected Governor of California for two terms in the early 70's, but did not run for a third term.
Reagan won the 1980 presidential election against incumbent Jimmy Carter, and was shot only a few months into his presidency by John Hinckley. Reagan soon recovered, and got right down to work. Reagan escalated the Cold War by ordering the mass buildup of nuclear arms due to the arms race between the US and Soviet Union. Reagan also implemented many economic policies, including drastic across-the-board tax cuts, that boosted the economy after a recession. These policies became to be known as Reaganomics.
After many years of tension building up, the Soviet Union finally subdued due to economic failure from the arms race, and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev signed the INF treaty with Ronald Reagan as the first step in nuclear disarmament. The Cold War ended quickly after this treaty, bringing the reuniting of East and West Germany, and the collapse of communism in Europe. After his Presidency, Reagan retired due to many illnesses, including Alzheimers disease. Ronald Reagan died June 5th, 2004, of pneumonia.
